Opposition parties in Georgia demonstrate weakness and inconsistency, even with the agreed nomination of a single candidate for the post of Tbilisi mayor, contradictions arise, said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

The opposition parties "Gakharia for Georgia" and "Lelo - Strong Georgia" nominated Irakli Kupradze as a single candidate for the post of Tbilisi mayor. Earlier, both parties, which signed a memorandum of cooperation for the elections scheduled for October 4, stated that a non-partisan person would be the single candidate. At the same time, Kupradze is the general secretary of the Lelo party.

"All this indicates inconsistency. This is certainly the result of weakness. Today, the radical opposition is extremely weakened, and that is why they cannot even decide on their decisions. They say one thing, then another, then do a third," Kobakhidze said.

As for the nomination of a specific candidate, according to the head of the Georgian government, this is also a manifestation of weakness.

"In fact, you see that the radical opposition is in the hands of children who are not particularly distinguished by education, experience or anything else. This is very good, the process is developing in the right direction," he added.

Elections in Georgia

Elections to local government bodies are the largest elections in the country, during which residents of all cities and districts elect their local leadership.

The threshold for proportional elections to all district advisory bodies (sakrebulo) is 4%. To win the mayoral elections, it is necessary to receive more than half of the votes of voters.

Elections to local government bodies differ from parliamentary elections in that the results are summed up separately in each district and may differ from district to district.

The upcoming elections will be held against the backdrop of a boycott by some opposition parties. To date, Freedom Square, For the People, European Georgia, United National Movement, Strategy Agmashenebeli, Akhali, Girchi – More Freedom, Droa and Federalists have refused to participate in the elections.

Most of the parties that have refused to participate say that they are not going to “play the games of the authorities,” which they call illegitimate, since they have not yet recognized the results of the parliamentary elections.
