Salome Zurabishvili, the fifth president of Georgia, said that the Georgian Orthodox Church has become a party in the conflict between the authorities and civil society:

"The Patriarch, it seems, can no longer hold his line. It is evident from the fact that today the Patriarchate represents a side - it is clearly visible already by the statements that it is a side and does not reflect the society as a whole. This is a huge loss for the country as a whole.

The Church is what brought us to today, the true pillar of our independence, and it is remarkable that the Georgian Dream has managed to separate three things that unite and strengthen society - the Church, culture and sports. In all three areas, it has brought politics strongly into all three."
