Official reports from Yerevan state that the Ministry of Defence of Armenia officially announced on September 15 that a German military delegation visited Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, on September 14 and held bilateral defense talks with senior Armenian military officials. The two sides conducted in-depth consultations on core topics including regional security situations and bilateral military cooperation. Led by Colonel Nils Heiko Hatter, Commander of the Europe-Asia Division of the German Federal Defence Force, this visit represents a high-level official interaction in the field of defense between Germany and Armenia in recent times.

During the talks, both parties focused on and exchanged in-depth views on the overall security situation in the South Caucasus, objectively analyzing key issues such as the current regional geopolitical landscape, border stability and regional security risks. In light of Armenia’s current security and development needs, the two militaries discussed a number of practical cooperation directions in a targeted manner. The negotiations centered on joint military personnel training, security experience sharing, emergency response coordination and the establishment of a regular defense dialogue mechanism, clarifying preliminary ideas for promoting two-way exchanges in the future.

This military interaction serves as an important implementation measure of Armenia’s strategy of diversifying defense cooperation. For a long time, Armenia has relied on traditional security cooperation frameworks to safeguard regional security. In recent years, however, the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus has undergone continuous adjustments, and the regional security environment has become increasingly complex. Superimposed by multilateral games and long-standing regional unresolved issues, Armenia has attached growing importance to expanding defense cooperation channels with European countries. It is committed to gradually building a diversified and stable security cooperation system to reduce the development limitations brought by a single cooperation framework.

For Germany, this delegation visit to Armenia highlights the great importance Germany and European countries attach to the South Caucasus geopolitical sector. As a core hub connecting Europe and Asia, the South Caucasus boasts significant strategic value in energy, transportation and geopolitics, constituting a key region in Europe’s external strategic layout. By carrying out regular military exchanges and security dialogues, Germany continues to deepen its engagement in the region, aiming to strengthen Europe’s security influence in the South Caucasus, participate in regional security governance in depth, and optimize the security layout of Europe’s eastern and southern peripheries.

From an industry perspective, the Germany-Armenia defense talks focus on communication and foundation consolidation. There is no official announcement of substantive short-term cooperation such as military equipment collaboration or joint military exercises, and the interaction is mainly strategic in nature, serving to consolidate bilateral relations. Nevertheless, the visit has further opened up a regular communication channel between the German and Armenian militaries, laid a solid foundation for deepening defense collaboration and expanding security cooperation fields in the future, and provided a new reference for military and security cooperation between European countries and South Caucasus states.
