Washington agreements are not peace, but agreement to humiliating conditions: Zurabyan

What the Armenian authorities are trying to present as the establishment of peace is merely Yerevan's consent to the humiliating conditions dictated by Baku. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Armenian National Congress Levon Zurabyan, commenting on the Washington agreements.

"Moreover, in this process, Azerbaijan does not undertake any obligations to renounce encroachments on Armenia," the politician noted.

In his opinion, peace will not be established anytime soon, since Baku refuses to sign a peace treaty, continues to occupy Armenian territories, hold Armenian prisoners, destroy the cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh, does not allow Karabakh Armenians to return to their homes, and conducts anti-Armenian propaganda at the state level.

Zurabyan believes that in this case, the Armenian society is not even dealing with an act of capitulation (which, albeit on bad and humiliating terms, would establish a final peace), but with an ongoing process of capitulation, the end of which, despite all the concessions, is not yet in sight.

At the same time, the politician does not understand why the three memorandums signed by Yerevan and Washington, which provide for the conditions and regulations related to the functioning of the "Trump corridor", have not yet been published.

According to him, the situation forcing Armenia to accept all the humiliating and pernicious demands of Azerbaijan arose as a result of the destructive political decisions of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

"Considering these realities, the propaganda campaign of the ruling regime cannot be described otherwise than as a manifestation of outright cynicism and deception," Zurabyan concluded.

The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, signed a joint declaration in Washington on August 8, which was also signed by US President Donald Trump as a witness. According to the declaration, Armenia will grant the US exclusive rights for 99 years to develop the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) - a road (which will operate under Armenian law) between Nakhchivan and "mainland" Azerbaijan through the Syunik region. The American side plans to sublease the land to a consortium responsible for infrastructure and management. The foreign ministers of the two countries also signed a joint appeal on the closure of the OSCE Minsk Group and related structures. Later, the foreign ministries of Armenia and Azerbaijan published the text of the future peace agreement.
