Kiev has condemned the elections taking place today in the occupied Georgian region of Abkhazia.

"Ukraine condemns and does not recognize the so-called presidential elections in the Russian-occupied Georgian region of Abkhazia. We will always support the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on social network X.

On March 1, Abkhazia is holding a repeat vote to elect a de facto president. Two candidates are running for the post - Adgur Ardzinba and Badra Gunba, who won the most votes in the first round on February 15. The latter is considered Moscow's favorite.

On the day of the first round, official Tbilisi called the elections a gross violation of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that any voting under Russian occupation is illegal.
