During a meeting in the Oval Office, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer corrected U.S. President Donald Trump, who said European countries that have provided aid to Ukraine will “get their money back,” according to NBC News.
“We're not getting our money back,” Trump added, then blamed former US President Joe Biden for not providing military aid in the form of a loan.
“We're not getting all (our aid back),” Starmer told Trump, adding, ”Quite a bit of our aid has been given, has been donated.”
Trump has previously criticized Ukraine for accepting military aid from European countries in the form of a loan, even though most aid from European Union countries comes in the form of grants or in-kind support rather than loans.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also corrected Trump in the Oval Office on the same issue, telling Trump then, “No, actually, frankly, we spent 60 percent of the total effort. It was done, as in the U.S., through loans, guarantees, grants. We provided real money, to be clear.” Macron made the clarification after Trump said that “Europe is lending money to Ukraine. They will get their money back.”
