A protest rally against Robert Fitzo's government, organized by a pro-Kiev NGO, is taking place in Bratislava under heightened security measures, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
On Friday, police blocked traffic several blocks away from Bratislava's Freedom Square, which had been designated as the venue for the anti-government rally. Police and ambulances are on duty near the square.
The pro-Kiev NGO, which organized the protest, demands, among other things, Fico's resignation as head of the Slovak cabinet. The rally participants are also chanting "Enough of Fico!". According to Slovak media, which refer to the organizers, 35-40 thousand people are taking part in the rally in Bratislava.
Anti-government rallies under the slogan "Slovakia is Europe" were planned on Friday in more than 20 cities in Slovakia. Their main organizers are a pro-Kiev NGO based in Slovakia. Prime Minister Fitzo said that the activists of this organization are linked to foreign experts who were involved in the events in Georgia and the Maidan in Ukraine. The Prime Minister noted that during the usual anti-government protests there could be attempts to break into government buildings or occupy them in order to interfere with the work of state bodies in order to overthrow the current government in Slovakia. The activists, for their part, said they had no such plans, noting that they only wanted to peacefully express their disagreement with the policies of the Fico government.
The activists of this public organization also earlier filed an application to the local general prosecutor's office with a request to check the steps taken by Prime Minister Fitzo towards Russia in recent times. This came after the Slovak prime minister visited Russia on December 22, where he was received by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
