The Ministry of Defense opened a section dedicated to the heroes of World War II

The Russian Defense Ministry has opened a new section on its website dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War who made a significant contribution to the development of the Soviet republics in the post-war period, the Russian Defense Ministry's information and mass communications department told reporters.


“On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation launches a new multimedia project dedicated to outstanding figures of the multinational Soviet Union, who showed heroism on the battlefields and in the postwar years made a significant contribution to the development of the Soviet republics,” the report says.


The project was created on the basis of declassified documents from the funds of the Central Archive of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation. The materials reveal unknown pages of the heroes' biographies, their military exploits, their role in the restoration and strengthening of the economy, culture, science and education in the post-war period, the department emphasized.


“Among the heroes of the project are representatives of different nationalities and republics of the Soviet Union: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Estonia. These are cultural figures, scientists, doctors, engineers, architects, clergymen, politicians, whose names are forever inscribed in the history of the country. Their fates are an example of courage, selflessness and devotion to the Motherland, which inspire new generations,” the Defense Ministry said.


The new section presents award lists, personal files, service records and photos of heroes. Visitors of the section can familiarize themselves with documents of pilot-cosmonaut Georgy Beregovoy, archimandrite anti-aircraft gunner Nifont (in the world Nikolay Glazov), fighter pilot and artist Mikhail Zelenkin, scout and economist Vladimir Kilchevsky, poets artilleryman Enver Alibeyli and scout Islam Safarli, anti-aircraft gunner and military historian Iraktsia Djordjadze, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia Vasily Mzhavanadze, artilleryman and writer Ivan Urjumelashvili.


The Defense Ministry also published various documents telling about the lives of doctor of medical sciences Artashes Beglaryan, artilleryman and theater historian Haykaz Yeranosyan, communicator and painter Izzat Klychev, infantryman and poet Anna Kovusov, military engineer and honored artist Samig Abdullayev, political worker and writer Sharif Rashidov, sniper and teacher Teshaboy Adylov, infantryman, poet and translator Habibulla Yusupov, infantryman and writer Baurjan Momyshuly, political officer and doctor of historical sciences Akai Nusupbekov, platoon commander and poet Temirkul Umetaliev, radio telegraphist and doctor of historical sciences Makai Usupov, playwright Arvid Grigulis, gunner and writer Jean Griva, engineer and architect Mart Port.
