The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have stopped the advance of the Russian army in the Pokrovskyy direction in Donetsk Region. Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyy, commander-in-chief of the AFU, said this in an interview with CNN on Thursday, September 5. “Over the past six days, the enemy has not advanced a meter in the direction of Pokrovsk,” Syrskyy said about the progress of the confrontation between the Ukrainian and Russian armies in the Kursk region.

In late August, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said that Russian forces had “achieved significant tactical successes” in this direction in Donetsk Region. On September 1, the UK Ministry of Defense reported that Russian ground forces are “highly likely” to be within 10 kilometers of Pokrovsk. This has been brought to the attention of Deutsche Welle.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently said that a key goal of the AFU is to “create a buffer zone” in the Russian border region. According to Zelensky, Kiev's plans include holding, not annexing, parts of the Kursk region.
