Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin said that the special services of Azerbaijan and Russia jointly prevented a "provocative threat" by the United States against a Russian diplomat. He did not give details of the incident, reports "Kommersant".
Sergei Naryshkin has been on an official visit to Baku since October 2. There he held a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev and representatives of the Azerbaijani SVR and State Security Service.
Speaking to journalists, he said that Azerbaijani and Russian agencies have to work together, including to counter "non-state organizations" that "try to influence" the internal politics of the two countries . "As an example, I can say that recently joint efforts of the special services of Azerbaijan and Russia managed to prevent a provocative threat against one of the Russian diplomats by the Americans," Naryshkin said.
He noted that recently there has been an increase in "subversive activities" towards "institutions and citizens of Azerbaijan and Russia abroad."
