The policy of the modern Georgian leadership is linked to the realization of the national Georgian identity and understanding of the harmfulness of the values of liberal democracy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the RBC media holding.
Earlier, the Georgian parliament adopted a legislative package on banning LGBT* propaganda by a majority vote in the second reading. On May 14, the parliament passed the law on transparency of foreign influence in the third and final reading despite street protests. The adoption of the law on foreign agents in Georgia has caused discontent in the West. The U.S. and the EU say they are reconsidering relations with Georgia. Also, the head of the Georgian Patriarchate's public relations service, Andria Jagmaidze, said that Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party had proposed that the patriarchate officially declare Orthodoxy the state religion.
“What the Georgian government is doing now is for them to realize their national identity and understand that the Georgian people have the same values of Orthodoxy, of national culture, which will be eroded, erased and subsumed by the “rules” that the West is imposing on everyone, primarily in the context of the values of liberal democracy or, if you will, democratic liberalism. Georgians are not satisfied with this. Neither does the unbridled imposition of the LGBT* agenda,” the minister said on the margins of the Eastern Economic Forum.
The Eastern Economic Forum is taking place September 3-6 on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok. RIA Novosti is the general information partner of the EEF-2024.
