Georgian PM flies to US to attend UN General Assembly session

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze will leave for the United States tomorrow to attend the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.


The Prime Minister is to address the General Assembly. It is not yet known what events he will take part in and what meetings he is planning on the margins of the high-level week in New York.


The press service of the government administration promises to provide detailed information tomorrow.


The visit, to all appearances, will not be an easy one.A few weeks before the parliamentary elections, relations between official Tbilisi and its Western partners have reached a critical point. The EU and the U.S. accuse the Georgian authorities of backsliding on democracy and disinformation aggressive rhetoric. The EU has suspended Georgia's EU accession process and confirmed that it is considering canceling the visa-free travel among other measures. The U.S., for its part, is imposing sanctions point-by-point, against specific individuals.


"Voice of America" on the eve that the U.S. prepared a package of sanctions against the founder and honorary chairman of the "Georgian Dream" Bidzina Ivanishvili. It is claimed that they will be a response to the Georgian billionaire's cooperation with Russian oligarchs and activities in the interests of the Russian Federation.


The Georgian government responds by claiming that Brussels and Washington are "under oligarchic influence" and the influence of the "global war party."
