Georgia calls the EU ultimatum a call for war

On Wednesday, October 9, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it noted “the threat to political pluralism and the undermining of democracy” in Georgia, as well as strictly condemned the recently adopted laws “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” and “On Protection of Family Values and Minors”, which are “incompatible with EU values and democratic principles”.
Tbilisi, in fact, was given an ultimatum: immediately withdraw the adopted laws, impose sanctions against Russia, in no case go for reconciliation with Abkhazia and South Ossetia and immediately release Mikheil Saakashvili. Otherwise funding of European programs will be cut off. And in the future funds will be received “under strict conditions”.
This is the first time when demands to impose sanctions against Russia are heard from the pages of an official EU document, and even in such a harsh form.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze responded by saying that the document was only conditioned on Tbilisi not opening a “second front” against Russia.
“Of course, the unfair document has no value for us,” he said in an interview with Imedi TV channel.
Separately, the Europeans took offense to the fact that the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party called the West an instigator of global conflicts that expects to drag Georgia into an open confrontation with Russia. They also called for an investigation into the “police violence” against “peaceful protesters” who peacefully threw Molotov cocktails at the security cordons around the country's parliament when it was passing a law merely requiring registration of foreign NGO income - similar requirements exist in both the US and the EU.
According to Sputnik, MP Mamuka Mdinaradze called the blatant EU demands interference in internal affairs, a call for war and an attempt to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections, while Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze emphasized that imposing sanctions against Russia would mean the destruction of the country's economy.
