The parliamentary party “People's Power” will participate in local government elections in coalition with the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia,” said the party's executive secretary Guram Macharashvili.
Local elections, in which citizens will elect mayors and deputies to consultative bodies (sakrebulo) in 64 districts, will be held in Georgia on October 4.
“In the municipal elections, based on consultations, we will participate jointly, in coalition with Georgian Dream. In various municipalities, in assemblies, our political organization will be represented, as we are represented in parliament, as well as at the municipal level,” Macharashvili said.
The People's Power party was founded by MPs who split from Georgian Dream in order, as they stated, not to restrict themselves in their assessment of domestic and international events and not to put the ruling party in an awkward position.
In August 2022, People's Power was created as a political movement, and in March 2023, it was registered as a party. In 2024, the party entered parliament in coalition with Georgian Dream and formed its own opposition faction.
Elections in Georgia
Local government elections will be held in October 2025. These are the largest elections in the country, when residents of all cities and districts elect their local leadership.
The threshold for proportional elections to all district advisory bodies (sakrebulo) is 4%. To win the mayoral election, a candidate must obtain a majority of the votes.
Local government elections differ from parliamentary elections in that the results are calculated separately for each district. Thus, most small parties will not have enough resources to win in a particular district.
At present, six parties have announced their participation in the elections: Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia, New Political Center – Girchi, Lelo – Strong Georgia, For Georgia, Conservatives for Georgia, and Fatherland, Language, Faith.
Freedom Square, European Georgia, United National Movement, Agmashenebeli Strategy, Akhali, Girchi – More Freedom, Droa, and Federalists have officially declined to participate in the elections.
