The editor-in-chief of the European Bureau of Radio Liberty, Rikard Jozwiak, does not confirm that the EU has already reached an agreement on the possible suspension of visa-free travel with Georgia.
Earlier a report on this was spread by Formula TV channel.
According to Jozwiak, who often reports insider information from behind the scenes of the EU, the suspension of visa-free travel is being discussed as one of the options, but no decision has been announced at the moment.
“I haven't heard anything about any new EU measures towards Georgia before the elections at the end of October, including suspension of visa-free regime. All options after the elections remain on the table and will be used depending on the situation, as previously reported.”
In response to the adoption of the law on foreign agents in Georgia, on June 25, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell announced the reduction of political contacts with the Georgian authorities and the beginning of a review of financial assistance to them.
On July 9, it became known that the EU froze the allocation of military aid to Georgia in the amount of 30 million euros through the European Peace Facility. Subsequently, Georgian media and opposition politicians reported on a whole range of programs, the financing of which some European countries decided to suspend.
