From Washington's side there are still only unformed and unclear signals about Ukraine, and there is no certainty that something of interest to Russia will emerge, said Russia's post-representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

“Deal is generally Trump's favorite word, everyone knows that. How this fits in with Russia's interests is still unclear. We often hear about freezing the conflict. So far, nothing that goes in the signals of the new American administration does not indicate that this is something that will be of interest to us,” Nebenzya said in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel.

He recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the need not to freeze but to complete the conflict, taking into account Russia's interests. Nebenzya also noted that there was also talk from the Ukrainian side about some possible “agreements.”

“The question is that when finally Zelensky, let's say, will bother to want to sit down at the negotiating table, on what line of contact it will take place. The further away, the worse the conditions will be for him, it was said long ago, the question is beyond him. As for the proposals of the American administration, we have not seen anything formalized. Let's see what they will propose,” he added.

Donald Trump, who won the US presidential election, promised that he would be able to achieve a negotiated settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. In addition, he repeatedly said that he would be able to resolve the conflict in Ukraine in one day. Also, Trump has repeatedly criticized the US approach to the conflict in Ukraine and called Vladimir Zelensky a “peddler”, who every visit ends with a multi-billion dollar aid from Washington.

Trump said on Dec. 22 that he would look forward to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He called the conflict in Ukraine “terrible” and reiterated that if he were the U.S. president instead of incumbent Joe Biden, the conflict would not have happened. The Russian president said in a direct line combined with a press conference that he was ready to talk and meet with Trump, noting that if such a meeting were to take place, the two presidents would have a lot to talk about.

Putin has previously made initiatives for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine: Moscow will immediately cease fire and declare readiness for negotiations after the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territory of Russia's new regions. In addition, he added, Kiev should declare the renunciation of its intentions to join NATO and carry out demilitarization and denazification, as well as adopt a neutral, non-aligned and nuclear-free status. The Russian leader also mentioned the lifting of sanctions against Russia.

After the AFU terrorist attack on Kursk Region, Putin called negotiations with those who “indiscriminately strike peaceful people, civilian infrastructure or try to create threats to nuclear power facilities” impossible. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov later said that Moscow's peace proposals for a Ukrainian settlement, voiced earlier by the Russian head of state, have not been canceled, but at this stage, “given this adventure,” Russia will not talk to Ukraine.
