Prime Minister of the Georgian Dream government Irakli Kobakhidze commented on the situation in Western Georgia, where heavy snowfall for six days has caused power, gas and water supply blackouts, destruction of houses and blocking of roads.
So far, two fatalities are known: in one of the villages a local resident fell while clearing snow from the roof, in another a man was found frozen in the street.
Kobakhidze arrived in Guria on Tuesday, where a coordination headquarters for disaster elimination was convened in Ozurgeti. Before that, Kobakhidze ordered to involve the army in the removal of snow debris. Defense forces joined more than 600 rescuers mobilized by the Interior Ministry.
According to Kobakhidze, some villages are still cut off from the outside world and communication with them has not yet been established.
Kobakhidze said that all agencies will be fully mobilized, while mobilization of medicines, food and firewood is needed at the same time.
“In general, there is a plan, the situation is difficult, there are many problems, but everything possible must be done,” Kobakhidze said.
He reiterated the headquarters' statement that volunteers are acting unorganized and not coordinating with the headquarters, which creates additional problems.
“Coordination is necessary and I call on the relevant people, volunteers, to do this,” Kobakhidze said.
* There is still no telephone number for the Coordination Headquarters hotline, the media noted.
