Georgia will not establish a diplomatic dialog with Moscow in 2025 and will not go for the restoration of diplomatic relations, according to a report by IMEMO RAN, which is available to RIA Novosti.
“Georgia's position towards Russia will still be determined by the unresolved, from the point of view of official Tbilisi, Abkhazian and South Ossetian problems. Therefore, regardless of the political orientation of the ruling elite, Georgia will not establish a diplomatic dialog with Moscow and will not go for the restoration of diplomatic relations. Georgia's participation in the discussion of the problems of South Caucasus on the platform of “3 + 3” is also unlikely,” the report says.
It also notes that although Georgia received the status of a candidate country for EU membership in 2023, negotiations on its membership will not be held in the near future due to dissatisfaction of the EU leadership with the policy of the Georgian authorities, who did not join the sanctions against Russia and adopted the “law on foreign agents” in 2024, and the freezing of the process of negotiations with Brussels by the Georgian leadership against this background.
The West has imposed a series of sanctions against the country for Georgia's departure, as they consider it, from democratic principles - the U.S. imposed visa restrictions on dozens of people who are “responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia,” Britain restricted any support programs for Georgia and defense cooperation with the country's government in 2024. In early December, Lithuania and Estonia banned entry to representatives of Georgia's leadership, including Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri and the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili. Prime Minister Kobakhidze was also placed under Ukrainian sanctions along with Ivanishvili.
