Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili congratulated the Pope Leo XIV on his election as the head of the Catholic Church.

The Georgian delegation headed by the President attended the Pope's inauguration ceremony at the Vatican the previous day.

“The beginning of His Holiness' pontificate is a symbol of hope for the future, spiritual renewal and unity for the whole world,” Kavelashvili said.

At the meeting, the sides discussed the current relations between Georgia and the Holy See and the prospects for strengthening cooperation. According to Mr. Kavelashvili, the union based on Christian values is an important basis for a close partnership.

For his part, Pope Leo XIV during his conversation with the President of Georgia emphasized the importance of establishing peace in the world and expressed readiness to deepen the existing partnership with Georgia.

Mikhail Kavelashvili invited the head of the Catholic Church to Georgia.

The conclave elected the 267th Pope on May 8. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States, a cardinal-protodeacon, became the new pope.
