The new Pope Leo XIV will worthily fulfill the honorable and at the same time responsible mission entrusted to him, Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili wrote on his social network page after the inauguration mass in the Vatican.

The Vatican conclave elected the 267th Pope on May 8. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States, a cardinal-protodeacon, became the new Pope.

“I attended the inauguration ceremony of the new Pope Leo XIV along with world leaders in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. Once again, I warmly congratulate His Holiness Leo XIV on his election as Pope. I am confident that he will fulfill this highly honorable and at the same time responsible mission with dignity,” Kavelashvili wrote.

As the President noted, Georgia is truly proud of and appreciates its historical ties with the Holy See and is ready to continue relations based on peace, mutual respect and common values.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II sent his congratulations to the Pope.

Pope Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88. Francis led the Catholic Church since 2013. He was buried in Rome on April 26.
