Russia has recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) as the official authority in the country. This was announced by Zamir Kabulov, the Russian president's special representative for Afghanistan, in a comment to the RIA Novosti news agency.
“Recognized,” he confirmed briefly.
According to Russian Ambassador to Kabul Dmitry Zhirnov, the decision to recognize the IEA was made by President Vladimir Putin at the suggestion of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Zhirnov emphasized that today's decision is “a sign of a sincere desire for full partnership and friendly relations with the Afghan people.”
On July 3, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko accepted copies of the credentials of the new ambassador of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Moscow, Gul Hassan Khan.
In response, the Afghan Foreign Ministry called Moscow's decision a “historic step” toward strengthening bilateral relations.
