A protest march demanding the resignation of the Georgian government is taking place in Tbilisi.
Several hundred people gathered in Didube and headed towards the Tbilisi Prosecutor's Office. The rally was joined by opposition activists, students, as well as relatives and friends of critics of the authorities detained in criminal cases in the context of street actions.
The column carries a large banner with the inscription “The illegitimate government must resign. Freedom for prisoners of the regime.” The marchers also hold placards with images of detained sympathizers.
The protesters are following a highway. They are accompanied by patrol police, who periodically call on the march to move to the side of the road, so as not to completely paralyze the traffic. So far, the action has passed without serious incidents.
The action marks the 150th day of continuous protests.
On November 28, 2024, after disputed parliamentary elections, Georgia approved the government and the same evening Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the freezing of the country's EU accession talks. This provoked widespread protests across the country.
Rallies have continued daily for five months now, though not as large as in the early days of the protests. “Georgian Dream,” meanwhile, has seriously tightened legislation on holding rallies, restricted foreign funding for media and NGOs, and promised to ban most opposition parties.
