The statement that the European Union or any EU country is forcing Armenia to do something in return for something is a Russian narrative. This was stated by Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan at a briefing after a panel discussion on "Together for Peace and Democracy" with the participation of the heads of parliaments of the Baltic and Northern European countries in Yerevan on January 23.

"Armenia makes its own choice. We have gone beyond what the EU can offer us. No EU country has ever set a condition to break ties, with any country. On the contrary, some EU countries have tried to hold us back from very many steps.

Yes, we are economically dependent on Russia. When the time comes, we will discuss with all our partners and understand what decisions can be made. At the same time, we are engaged in diversification in all spheres and we will continue this process in order not to depend on any one country," the Parliament Speaker noted.

He expressed confidence that the discussions and the visit of the colleagues (of the Baltic and Northern European countries - ed.) will have a positive impact on the peace process.

"My colleagues and I discussed all issues, including the issues of prisoners of war and the peace treaty," he concluded.
