A number of bills introduced in the Georgian parliament are directed against the “deep state” and are designed to protect the country's national security, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.

“This is, in fact, a package of measures against the 'deep state'. We need to protect the security of our country, including legislation, and each of the bills that have been introduced in the parliament serves this purpose. This applies including the transparency law, where even greater clarity is required in order to fully protect the national security of our country and the same applies to any other bill. We have to protect our country from any threat, we have all the resources for this and the laws that are initiated will be adopted for this purpose,” the Prime Minister told reporters.

The ruling Georgian Dream party in February initiated a new law on foreign agents, which is an exact copy of the current FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) law in the United States. A new bill restricting media funding, which will be analogous to the British one, will also be introduced in parliament. Members of the Georgian parliament have already supported in the first reading a package of bills to introduce criminal punishment of up to three years in prison for calling for violent actions.

The Georgian authorities previously adopted the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence,” also known as the law on foreign agents. The EU criticized the law and demanded that Tbilisi repeal it, threatening to suspend the EU accession process, cut off financial support and even halt visa liberalization for Georgian citizens
