After the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, external forces pushed Georgia towards war with Russia, leaving the republic alone with a nuclear power. Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili said this in an interview with Radio Courtoisie. His words are quoted by TASS.
“We were left alone with a nuclear power and promised: 'Come on, we will provide you with weapons'.” Young pro-Europeans urged us to go to war against Russia. They were forcing the then government to do so. The question arises: “Should Georgia have participated in this war?” - Kavelashvili said.
As the Georgian head of state noted, such calls appeared from the first day after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine.
“We were urged to join sanctions, send volunteers [to Ukraine] and support the war, while we are neither members of NATO nor the European Union,” the president added.
He emphasized that the Georgian authorities were helped by the people in defending national interests. Kavelashvili criticized the actions of former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. “One day history will recognize that we saved the country. We had to tell the truth to our citizens. It is a pity that then President Zurabishvili stood behind the back of Moldova and Ukraine,” Kavelashvili concluded.
Irakli Garibashvili announced on February 25, 2022, when he was prime minister of Georgia, that he had no plans to impose sanctions against Russia, explaining it by national interests. In early March last year, Volodymyr Zelensky recalled the Ukrainian ambassador from Tbilisi because of the position of the Georgian authorities on the issue of sanctions. This decision of the Georgian government was also criticized by the opposition, accusing the authorities of the republic of cooperating with Russia. In addition, the leadership of the ruling party often accused the Ukrainian authorities and some European politicians of trying to open a second front on Georgian territory. In their opinion, certain forces intend to provoke Russia into conducting parallel military operations there.
