The leaders of the Coalition for Change, Elene Khoshtaria and former Georgian Dream MP Gedevan Popkhadze, ended their hunger strike after opposition parties announced a boycott of the upcoming local elections.

Earlier, Khoshtaia and Popkhadze said they would end their hunger strike if the opposition united and refused to participate in the elections. On Monday, representatives of eight opposition parties in Georgia announced a boycott of the upcoming autumn local elections and refused to participate in them. The joint statement on the boycott was signed by the Freedom Square, Girchi - More Freedom, United National Movement, Agmashenebeli Strategy, European Georgia, Akhali, Droa, and Federalists parties.

“I am very happy to end my hunger strike and move on to the active phase of the struggle together,” Khoshtaaria told reporters.

The information about the end of Popkhadze's hunger strike was also confirmed to journalists by the Coalition for Change party.

Local elections will be held in Georgia in the fall of this year.

At the same time, systematic protests are taking place in Georgia demanding new parliamentary elections. The protests began after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on November 28, 2024, that he had decided to suspend consideration of the issue of starting negotiations on the country's membership in the European Union until 2028.
