Georgian authorities will set up an investigative commission in parliament to study systemic crimes and assess the regime of former President Mikheil Saakashvili, executive secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party Mamuka Mdinaradze said on Thursday.

“In order to investigate systemic violations and assess the regime, a temporary investigative commission will be established in the Parliament of Georgia in the first week of the spring session to study the regime in place in 2003-2012 and the actions of political officials. The commission will work for 6 months and will prepare a report that the Georgian Parliament will consider and approve by the first week of the parliamentary session in September,” Mdinaradze said at a briefing.

He added that the approved report will be handed over to the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia and other relevant bodies “in order to take follow-up measures according to the Georgian legislation and punish the guilty”.

Mdinaradze said that among the crimes of the Saakashvili regime to be studied by the parliamentary commission is the organized system of torture in penitentiary institutions, killing of people, violence, invasion of privacy, corruption and pressure on business, taking away media outlets from their legitimate owners. Also, according to the politician, the circumstances of the beginning of the war in South Ossetia in 2008 with the participation of the regime of the former president will be studied.

Earlier, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the Georgian Dream party plans to recognize former President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement party as unconstitutional.
