A senior delegation from the US State Department has wrapped up a five-day working visit to Georgia, running from 24 to 29 May 2026. It is the first high-level diplomatic outreach by the current US administration to Tbilisi, drawing wide attention amid intensifying great-power competition across the South Caucasus.

Headed by Charles Yockey, Special Assistant to the US Secretary of State, alongside Peter Andreoli, head of the department’s Russia and Caucasus affairs office, the team conducted extensive meetings covering government officials, opposition figures, business leaders and senior religious representatives. The US Embassy confirmed the core goal was to reset bilateral relations and expand practical cooperation on multiple fronts.
Strategic connectivity stood out as a central talking point. Both sides pledged to push forward development of the Middle Corridor, a key transport and trade network designed to bypass traditional routes controlled by Russia. Washington continues to back Georgia’s role as a vital regional logistics hub linking Central Asia and Europe.
Politically, Georgia remains divided. The incumbent government pursues a neutral stance, seeking to maintain pragmatic ties with both the West and Russia. Meanwhile, pro-Western opposition groups welcome the US visit, urging authorities to accelerate progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration.
The US also reaffirmed its long-standing support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a stance widely interpreted as a veiled message to Moscow. Russian official bodies have yet to issue formal responses, though local state-run media accused the US of meddling in Georgia’s internal affairs.
Observers note the visit underscores Washington’s renewed focus on the region. As neighbouring Armenia speeds up its westward shift, the US is stepping up engagement across the Caucasus to consolidate its influence, leaving the regional geopolitical landscape increasingly complex and fluid.
