Georgia is ready to start relations with the US with a clean slate and expects counter steps from the administration of President-elect Donald Trump, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.

‘One of our main foreign policy priorities is to restart relations with the US, for this we will do everything possible... Our goal is to restart relations with the US with a clean slate, to resume strategic partnership... There is absolute openness and readiness for this from our side and we hope that under the new administration we will see counter steps,’ the prime minister told reporters.

In late November, the State Department said that the US was suspending strategic partnership with Georgia because of alleged ‘anti-democratic actions’ of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

On 27 December, the US imposed sanctions against the founder and honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili. The sanctions imply freezing Ivanishvili's assets in the United States and banning American citizens and companies from doing business with him.
