Georgian Head of State Mikhail Kavelashvili expressed hope that US President Donald Trump will take Georgian-American relations to a new level.

“I congratulate Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States of America, on his inauguration. I hope that under his leadership we will be able to bring Georgian-American relations to a qualitatively new stage. I wish success to President Trump in achieving his goals, defending his stated values and fighting global challenges!” - Kavelashvili wrote on his Facebook page*.

At the end of November last year, the State Department said that the U.S. was suspending its strategic partnership with Georgia because of alleged “anti-democratic actions” by the ruling Georgian Dream party. On December 27, the United States imposed sanctions against the founder and honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream Bidzina Ivanishvili. The sanctions imply freezing Ivanishvili's assets in the U.S. and banning American citizens and companies from doing business with him.
