Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Papuashvili compared US sanctions to an attack on the country

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili compared US sanctions to an attack on the country, his words are quoted by Sputnik Georgia in its Telegram channel.

“In order to reset relations, false accusations made against Georgia and the Georgian people must stop. Part of the false accusations is the imposition of sanctions, especially against policemen. In any country a policeman is the face of the state and its representative. Therefore, any attack on a policeman is an attack on the state” - he said.

This is how the politician commented on the imposition of Western sanctions.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on June 6 that the U.S. was imposing visa restrictions against dozens of Georgian citizens. Miller specified that it is about two or three dozen persons who will not be notified by Washington about the decision, but they are banned from entering the territory of the United States.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on July 31 that the United States was suspending the program of financial assistance to Georgia because of the adoption of the law on foreign agents in the country. For the same reason, the EU had earlier suspended funding for the Georgian Defense Ministry.

In addition, the Pentagon said that the United States indefinitely postponed joint military exercises with Georgia due to the revision of bilateral relations. The exercises were planned for July 25-August 6. Georgian authorities have repeatedly reported the need to reset relations between the countries.
