Azerbaijan has filed a lawsuit against Armenia with the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, demanding compensation for environmental damage and the alleged destruction of the unique nature of Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
The lawsuit was filed on February 12, based on the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (the Berne Convention) of 1979.
Azerbaijan's lawsuit against Armenia is the first known interstate arbitration process based on the Berne Convention.
The statement by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry claims that "horrific facts of environmental destruction by Armenia" have been revealed in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan demands full compensation from Armenia for the "mass destruction of habitats and wildlife."
At the same time, on January 18, 2023, Azerbaijan sent Armenia a notification of the start of the arbitration process based on the specified "evidence."
On September 15, 2023, the composition of the arbitration court was approved, and on April 12, 2024, the first procedural hearing between Azerbaijan and Armenia took place at the Peace Palace in The Hague.
