After declaring independence in 1991, the Constitution was adopted on July 5, 1995, and the same day became a state holiday.
At that time, the opposition declared the results of the referendum falsified, but according to official data, the Constitution was adopted. It was the first Constitution of Armenia.
Over the years, the Basic Law has been amended twice through referendums: the first one was held on November 27, 2005, and the second one on December 6, 2015.
