Steps are being taken to normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Azerbaijani presidential aide-Chief of the Foreign Policy Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev has stated, Azerbaijani media report.
“Very favorable conditions for peace have been created in the region. A new status quo and a new reality have appeared in the South Caucasus. And this status quo is based not on occupation, not on aggression, but on relations based on the norms and principles of international law, legitimacy and legality. Official Baku has submitted to the Armenian side the text of the peace treaty on normalization of relations with Armenia. This is a clear evidence of Azerbaijan's commitment to and support for the regional peace agenda. It is positive that the text of the peace treaty has been agreed upon. However, there are still open issues that have not been agreed with Armenia.
In order for us to achieve lasting, definitive peace in the region, it is necessary to end Armenia's territorial claims to Azerbaijan on a constitutional basis. But we can say with satisfaction that since the independence of Azerbaijan and Armenia, favorable conditions for peace have emerged in the region. Today, peace and stability really reign in the region. De facto, we can say that peace reigns in the region. Azerbaijan will continue to make efforts for this to be legally formalized so that final peace is established in the region,” Hajiyev said.
